CRETE
ISLAND OF MYTHS AND LEGENDS
Crete is a beautiful tapestry of magnificent beaches, ancient treasures, and landscapes woven into bustling towns and picturesque villages, and the locals share its traditions, wonderful cuisine, and generous spirit. Enchanting landscapes can be seen everywhere, from the sun-drenched beaches of the north to the rugged canyons that spill down the rock-carved bays and cliffs of the southern coast. In between, the valleys cradle quintessential hamlets, and the rounded hills and mountaintops are often covered in snow. Crete's natural beauty is matched only by the richness of its history. The island was the birthplace of the first developed society on European soil, the Minoans, who ruled some 4,000 years ago. Impressive vestiges bear witness to their lives, the most famous of which is the palace at Knossos. Situated at the crossroads of three continents, Crete was coveted and occupied by successive invaders. History pervades Chania and Rethymno, where labyrinthine streets and mighty fortresses, magnificently restored Renaissance mansions intermingle with mosques and Turkish baths, magnificent chapels, churches, and monasteries richly decorated with frescoes. If you're a food lover, you'll be in paradise on Crete, where "locavore" is not a trend but a way of life. Village tavernas often offer dishes made from their own meat, cheese, olive oil, brandy, and wine or freshly caught seafood. Characteristic herbs and greens gathered from each hillside are added to each unique recipe, characteristic of the village or household. The Cretan diet and way of eating is known to be the healthiest in the world and is usually paired with an excellent local wine and a fiery glass of brandy to finish. Untouched by mass tourism, the villages are the backbone of Cretan culture and identity - especially those nestled in the hills and mountains. The island's spirited people still uphold many of their unique customs, and traditions remain a dynamic part of daily life. Musicians playing local instruments, such as the stringed lyre, or wedding guests dancing their traditional regional dances represent a living preservation of the atmosphere. Meeting the ordinary people gossiping in the cafes, tending their sheep, or celebrating during the many festivals is what makes a visit to Crete so special and a must on any traveler's list!
