HISTORY AND GLORIOUS PAST

Xi'an, once the terminus of the Silk Road and a meeting ground for cultures and religions, home to emperors, courtesans, poets, monks, merchants, and warriors, may have lost its glory in the early 10th century, but a significant part of ancient Chang'an, the former city, survives behind the modern metropolis. Its rich history gives the city a unique charm as a tourist town, as the home of the world-famous Terracotta Warriors and horses, and as the starting point of the Silk Road, along which China had its most important economic and cultural communication with the Western world. Here is the best place to imagine the culture of ancient China! The Ming-era city walls are intact, the narrow streets of the Muslim Quarter are still thronged with vendors selling all kinds of goods, and there are enough places of interest to keep even the biggest history buffs in suspense. Once known as Chang'an (Eternal Peace) it was ruled by the Zhou, Qing, Han, and Tang dynasties, and the archaeological sites on the surrounding plains - the famous Terracotta Army - thousands of life-size hand-moulded figures, are buried alongside China's first emperor, Qin Shihuang. Located in the center of China, the capital of Shanxi Province, Xi'an, along with Athens, Rome, and Cairo, have been called the four greatest ancient capitals in history!
